The night of October 17, 2005 two tugboats were tied together at a dock. Their names are the
Legacy and the Magic. The Magic held about 200 gallons of diesel oil.
The two tugs were sitting peacefully at the dock, then SPLASH! The rusted out tank started to
fill with water. Then the hatch was filled with water, and then the Magic sank. It pulled the
Legacy down with it.
It covered most of Port Gamble Bay. It reached most of Drift Wood Keys.
Luckily the diesel did not stick to any of the birds. The oil got on the salmon, but didn't hurt them.
With our oil spill we used booms and pads. We used absorbent pads for our oil spill.
We didn't burn the oil at Port Gamble. We didn't use chemicals, but we used booms and absorbent
pads.
The oil got on the shore, but we didn't spray the rocks. Oil spills are major disasters. Slowly
scientists are learning how to clean them up. They are learning how to prevent oil spills. Do you
have any ideas of how to prevent oil spills?
How to prevent oil spills: We can use less oil, if we use less oil there will be fewer oil tankers in
the ocean.
So if any lights at your house or at work are on when they don't need to be on, turn them off
and keep them off unless you need the light on. Electricity is often produced by oil.
